Introduction

This year, join 250 hackers to create, innovate and push technology to new limits!

We'll provide the mentors, APIs, hardware and other cool tech resources to empower you to create great projects in just 24 hours.

QRT Visualisation of Market Data Challenge

The challenge is to connect to public crypto exchange endpoints extract the trade data and effectively display the data in a visual format.

Key points:

    • Note that the stream is a continuous real-time stream of data.
    • It is recommended to start with trade data and only one symbol i.e. BTCUSDT

Judging criteria:

Apart from a working solution that displays the market data in a creative way, we will also be looking at the quality of code (e.g. SOLID principles and evidence of testing).

Prizes:

  • First Place – 5 x JBL Flip Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers
  • Second place – 5 x Exclusive QRT Swag Bags

QRT Stock Prediction Model Challenge

The challenge is to create a machine learning model that learns to predict the 1-day return using the provided data

Key points:

  • Quantitative investment strategies require the analysis of historical data to predict the trend of a stock in the near future.
  • The data contains different stocks with their historical residual returns and volume.
  • The data, full challenge details and a benchmarking tool can be found here: https://durhack.qrt.services/
  • Attend our workshop at 4pm with Firas on “Introduction to Kaggle data competitions” to get some tips and tricks.

Judging criteria:

Competitors will be judged on 4 criteria: Data Analysis, feature engineering, modelling, and the accuracy of the predictions

Prizes:

  • First Place – 5 x JBL Flip Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers
  • Second place – 5 x Exclusive QRT Swag Bags

Waterstons: Intelligent Buildings

Key Points:

25% of the UK’s total energy use is for heating buildings* That’s more than our total electricity, and even all our vehicle transport.

We want our Hack to be focused on sustainability. Can you do something that would give us a more sustainable future?

To give you a starting point, we’ve got a few suggestions.

1. We can give you a huge dataset from a smart building. It’s got temperatures, window open/close, motion. Can you find anything interesting in it. We also have provided a series of datasets from Durham council, which include information on the town

2. Before this Hackathon started, we snuck into this building and placed some smart sensors around it. They’ve got an API. Can you use these to suggest more sustainable use? We can tell you where they are – or if you want more of a challenge, you can work that out from the data!

3: We don’t want to restrict you! You can make anything you want, as long as it’s on the theme of sustainability! A game, or app, or art piece, it all counts!

Judging criteria:

Exciting, innovative, technical execution preferred but optional!

Prizes:

Raspberry Pi with soil-monitoring kit and plant pots for sustainable chilli growing!

Funniest Hack

Best DeSO Hack

DeSo is the official Web3 sponsor of the MLH Hackathon League and the first Layer 1 blockchain custom-built for decentralized social media applications. While a blockchain like Avalanche costs $0.50+ to store just a 200-character post, the DeSo blockchain is built with custom indexing and storage optimizations which make it 10,000X cheaper to store social content on-chain! In order to qualify for the contest, build a hack that uses the DeSo API. While social media apps are a great fit for DeSo, you can also build financial apps, marketplaces, and more on the DeSo blockchain. To get started, sign up for a DiamondApp account, make a post tagging @deso with both your event hashtag & #MLH. The DeSo team will then send you even more $DESO coin to build your hackathon project!
On top of that, the team with the Best Use of DeSo gets $100 worth of $DESO coin & an exclusive DeSo branded tumbler!

To take it a step further, GitHub is now offering you access to industry tools, events & learning resources through something called GitHub Global Campus. Win this weekend’s Best Use of GitHub prize category, first by signing up for GitHub Global Campus and second by using a GitHub repository to host your hackathon project’s code! Make sure your use of GitHub stands out with a detailed ReadMe page, meaningful pull requests and collaboration history, and even a GitHub pages deployment!
